Manufacturers started marketing liquid HE detergents in the larger plastic jugs similar to regular detergents. The problem was, many shoppers did not notice the HE symbol, nor knew what it stood for. Hence, many shoppers bought this detergent for their regular top-loading washers and were miffed when it hardly produced any soap suds. The HE marked jugs were also difficult to detect amidst the array of various laundry detergents.
A new packaging has emerged for the HE detergent, a much smaller plastic bottle that is easier to spot and handle. It also contains less water, reducing the bulk while keeping the cleaning agent. However, these are concentrated formulas, and care must be taken to read and follow instructions since they may be 2x's or 3x's the concentrated detergent formula.
With the new bottles, comes a change in pricing only adding to the confusion. High efficiency detergents generally are comparable in price to regular laundry detergents that render comparable washloads. The difference in pricing is mostly attributed to the concentrated formulas which, although the bottle is smaller, may be designed for 64 or 90 plus wash loads.
When shopping for high efficiency detergent:
- Make sure the HE symbol is clearly identified on the bottle.
- When filling your cart with several bottles, make sure the symbol is on each one; it's easy to miss.
- If the detergent is concentrated, expect to pay double or close to triple what a regularly-sized jug would cost if more cleaning loads are featured. Look at the amount of loads stated on the bottle when comparing prices.
- Find a brand you like and stick with it to lessen future confusion.
- Educate your grocer on the fact that top-loading high efficiency washers require HE detergents, if it's difficult to find in your area.
- It takes a little effort to find, but some manufacturers do make fragrance-free HE formulas if that is your preference.
