You may have already spotted some newer, smaller 2X laundry bottles on your grocer's shelves, but it won't be long before these smaller jugs become the norm. Large jug liquid detergents are being reformulated and re-packaged in more efficient and convenient smaller bottles.
Procter & Gamble Rolls Out 2X Bottles
Procter & Gamble, the makers of popular brands including Tide®, Gain®, Era® and Dreft® are in the process of revamping their entire liquid detergent lines into 2X concentrated formulas. They've already started to roll out the smaller 2X bottles and by April 2008, distribution will extend to the rest of the US and Canada.
Why 2X Packaging?
Why is the formula and size of the jug changing? The benefits are huge, both to you and to the environment:
- Smaller bottles are more convenient, easier to carry, store and pour.
- Concentrated detergent means less water used in the formula.
- Smaller bottles use less packaging materials, reducing landfill waste and manufacturing costs.
- Smaller jugs mean a reduction in transportation and fuel costs.

As long as the number of loads stated is the same for the smaller 2X concentrated bottles as for the larger jugs, the pricing should be the same. If you do find a price difference between the large jugs and 2X concentrated bottles for the same number of loads, ask your grocer to recheck the pricing.
There are certain brands that are 3X concentrated, so it's important to go by the number of loads stated, when you're doing a price comparison.
How Much Do I Use For a Load?
Remember that the amount of 2X detergent you'll need for each load will be reduced - follow the directions on the new 2X bottles. The caps are well marked. If you're used to just pouring it in without measuring, you'll have to be careful to pour only half of what you usually use.
I've already been using the 2X concentrated Tide HE and I just love the size of the bottle, it's just so much nicer to carry home, lift and pour in the washer. And it takes a lot less room to store a few bottles in my laundry cabinet.
When it comes to 2X detergents, buying smaller is definitely better! It's an easy and pleasant way for us to conserve while helping the environment.
