Appliance Replacements - Performance & Convenience

Performance & Convenience

Modern appliances are loaded with features and high tech options, but all these conveniences add to their price tag. Decide which options matter the most to you, and choose accordingly. Comparison shop wisely. Why pay for features you will never use.

Choose Energy Star qualified appliances for the best savings in energy dollars. In the absence of Energy Star certification, buy the appliance that has the lowest Energy Guide Rating. This rating represents the amount of kilowatt hours it will use per year, under normal operating conditions. You can multiply this rating by the electricity charge in your area to see what it will typically cost you per year to operate it. The lower the Energy Guide rating - the better the saving.

Many appliances have energy saving options, like the economy dry settings on dishwashers, 1 and 2 hour auto shut-off on coffee makers, and low water features on washers. Delay start has now become a great energy saving option for those areas that pay for electricity based on when they use it, with peak and off-peak rates. You can set a dishwasher with this feature while you're loading it, but it will only start later in the evening when energy off-peak rate is lower.

Consider handling and ease of operation. Choose a vacuum that you can easily lift and maneuver, or consider an upright that may be easier to handle. When buying a new laundry set, the optional pedestal drawers do add to the cost, but may greatly increase the ease of transferring clothes and reducing back strain. An upright freezer may be more accessible for you than a chest model.

Before you purchase a new appliance, note the warranty details and ensure that you know where it can be serviced. And it may be worth it to consider an optional extended warranty on larger appliances to maximize their lifespan.

Starting early and carefully choosing your new appliances and housewares to suit your lifestyle and home will certainly ease the transition to retirement living.
