How Do Your Dishes Stack Up? - A Plate Storage Challenge!

By Mariette Mifflin, About.com

Considering new dinnerware but your cupboard's already bulging at the seams? Maximizing plate storage requires some creativity. Sometimes, just shuffling the stacks of plates and bowls around can solve this problem. But other times, we have to consider alternative options.

Dishes vary in thickness and stackability, so I put my dishes to a 'Plate Storage Challenge' to see how they measured up. I compared stacks of eight large and small dinner plates of Corelle® and the same amount of Laurentiene stoneware. I knew there would be a difference, but I was amazed at the results.

The stoneware stack took slightly more than double the space of the Corelle dishes. In fact, the large dinner plates took even more - almost three times the height. The difference in the small and large dinner plates was due to the increased thickness of the large stoneware plates; Corelle plates are the same thickness, whether large or small.

Other storage solutions you may want to consider for your dinnerware, are plate racks, wall-mounted or hutch-style, or tiered shelving racks that are placed right in the cupboard to accommodate an assortment of dishes.

Of course, adding a small pantry or a china cabinet to your kitchen or dining area can also solve storage problems.

When it comes to getting the most stacked in your cupboard, thinner dishes can really save on space. If you're in the market for new tableware, you may want to consider how well they'll stack up.
