Bundt Pans - Add Fun & Style to Your Baking

By Mariette Mifflin, About.com

Bundt pans are not new, I've had one for close to 20 years, but what is new, is the various styles and themes that are available on the market today. These pans can make a simple cake look elegant and inviting, and deliver a meatloaf that looks like a gourmet meal.

Using a bundt pan for a quick cake enables you to omit the icing if you so desire, or to reduce the frosting to a runny glaze that is just poured over the top and drizzles down the cake, resulting in a healthier dessert for everyone. You can even just dust your cooled cake with a little icing sugar for a wonderful look. A sprinkle of chopped nuts, lemon/orange peel or coconut is also a good garnish.

I've often used a bundt pan for meatloaf as well. When the cooled, drained loaf is turned over, the recessed area provides a great place for sliced carrots, and you can add steel-scooped servings of mashed potatoes all the way around the meatloaf, for a most stunning complete meal.

Small muffin pans can also be used for individual meatloaf servings, but are a little more difficult to drain. You'll have to remove each loaf from its pan. For best results, use the leanest meat possible, use care when draining off hot grease, and guard against burns from the rim of the pans.

Hint: To turn a large meatloaf over, after it is well drained, place the plate on top of the pan, then turn the whole thing over. You can then more easily slide the loaf from that plate to a larger serving platter.

The muffins pans shown to the right are made of cast aluminum and manufactured by Nordic Ware®. These have provided very good even baking results, and this company has quite a variety of bundt pans.

Uses are limitless, from shaped rice crispie square to gelled moulds, your family will love digging into these offerings. Need a quick coffee cake for that pot-luck dinner? Use a cake mix for quick baking results. A 12 cup Bundt pan is just right for a two-layer cake mix. If you're using a smaller pan, adjust your batter accordingly.

Clean up is easy, many of these pans have a type of nonstick coating, and most bundt pans are dishwasher safe. Use rubber spatulas when loosening the cake from the pan to prevent scratching it, and follow the manufacturer's care recommendations. I've applied a quick oil spray even to nonstick pans, to make removal that much easier.

Bundt pans do produce stunning results that's for sure, but half the fun is in using the pans.
