Oil lamps like the Queen Mary pictured here, are very easy to find at antique markets or yard sales, and are not only a beautiful accent piece, but can become a very practical and essential housewares in the event of a power blackout.

Some of these old lamps have replacement globes since the originals have long since been broken. A close inspection can reveal even to an untrained eye, that the old glass base of the lamp has a purplish hue to it, whereas the globe is absolutely clear glass. This of course does lower its antique value, but in no way does it reduce it's usefulness.

If you're looking for one of these, it's a good idea to ensure that the metal mechanism is still securely fastened to the lamp, is not rusted and seized, and that the wick can easily roll up or down. Replacement wicks and lamp oil can be found at most hardware stores.

There are many replica and modern oil lamps available on the market today to blend in with any decor, either as candle holders, sconces or hurricane lamps. These also make a great gift for that special occasion.

As with any candle or fuel burning item, care should be taken when operating these lamps, and they should not be left unattended.
