What are pink ribbon products, housewares and appliances? And why should we purchase pink ribbon items and support this campaign?

A. The Pink Ribbon has become an international symbol of hope and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

Certain manufacturers, organizations and corporations have joined in the fight to raise awareness and support on-going breast cancer research, by partnering with breast cancer organizations, and developing or marketing items that are specially designed to denote the color pink. Products vary from small appliances, kitchen gadgets, mugs, pins, caps and other various items.

From the sale of these items, a portion is donated to a breast cancer information and resource or research organization, or to a national or private cancer foundation. In some cases, the exact amount of the donation is clearly noted. The main goal of the campaign is to continue the research with the hope of finding a cure for breast cancer.

Consumers should be aware however, that there may be occasions when items are marketed for the symbol alone to foster awareness, and donations may not necessarily be made from the purchase. Buyers should be aware of where donation proceeds will be going when they purchase a pink ribbon houseware or appliance with the intent of supporting breast cancer research.

It should also be noted that not all pink color housewares are 'pink ribbon' products. Products associated with a pink ribbon campaign should clearly denote where donations from the sale of such products will be going.
