How the Hamilton Beach Electric Kettle Performed

July 25, 2009 A pleasant surprise, the color red is a nice dark shade with an almost metallic finish and the kettle is actually bigger than expected. I love the drip-free pouring regardless how fast or slow I pour and the cordless serving is tops. The cord is short and can be wrapped under the cordless base. The kettle lifts and replaces easily on this base.

This kettle actually has several extremely nice features - made of stainless steel, it has an interior that's easy to clean and looks nice with the concealed element. The stainless steel actually keeps the water hot (after shutting off) for a few minutes longer than with a non-steel kettle. The handle is comfortable and reasonably non-slip for a safe grasp when carrying or pouring.

Its best feature is the boil-dry protection - the kettle shuts off when it reaches the boiling point. I have a habit of multi-tasking and forgetting the kettle is on, so I consider this is an essential. For the shut-off feature to work, the lid must be placed properly on the kettle. The on/off switch is at the base of the handle and lights when on.

I tested the claim that it's faster than a microwave by boiling 1 quart of water in each - the kettle won by a few seconds over my 1000W microwave.

Overall Impression

This Hamilton Beach Candy Apple kettle has all the features I'd want in an electric kettle and the price is excellent for a stainless steel cordless model. I didn't find anything I didn't like in this kettle, even the capacity is ample to fill a large tea pot or add boiling water to a soup pot, without a bulky style.

As for the design, I love the 'stove-top kettle' look and though I usually shy away from brightly-colored electrics, this shade of red is striking and the kettle looks very cute and cheery on the counter. My favorite features: Dripless pouring, cordless operation and of course, the auto shut-off.

This kettle is a great buy with lots of features and a cheery look that tends to grow on you.

Doesn't Work, Member StarliteDriveIn

I recently purchased a Hamilton Beach electric kettle at Costco and had to return it because the ""on"" switch wouldn't stay down (yes, I had plugged it in and filled it with water). You have to be very mechanically challenged not to know how to operate it. I purchased a second one at Costco, plugged it in at home and filled the kettle with water. What are the chances it wouldn't work? Apparently, quite substantial. The switch stayed down about 20 seconds, about long enough to turn the water lukewarm. I returned it. Don't think I'll take a chance on a third one.
