Question: What is a Whole House Flow-Through ByPass Humidifier
What is a whole house, furnace, flow-through or bypass type of humidifier?
Answer: Although console humidifiers are often also called 'whole house' units, the term generally applies to a humidifier appliance that is connected to the home's heating or cooling system via a by-pass in the duct work, for a flow-through of humidity every time the heating system is operated. They are also known as furnace humidifiers and can only be installed if there is a duct system in the home.

A whole house humidifier requires a permanent installation to the home's system and includes a plumbing and electrical hook-up. Installing a flow-through humidifier should be done by a qualified person. Though there is an initial outlay for this installation, maintenance is low and operation is simple. Every time the home's heating/cooling system is turned on, humidity flows through the ducts to every area of the house, where the duct network extends.

The main advantage to flow-through humidifiers is lower maintenance and whole-home humidifying without effort - no water refilling. The disadvantage is that when the heating system is not operating, there is no humidity. There is also a risk of over-humidifying a home, especially during damp weather. The home's humidity should be monitored regularly with a hygrometer to ensure that proper levels of humidity are maintained. Excessive moisture can create unhealthy mildew problems.
