How the Presto Liddle Griddle Performed

December 06, 2011
Out of the box and compared to our current griddle, it looks extra tiny on the counter and is smaller than the photo suggests. But it doesn't take long to get used to this nice compact size and appreciate the extra room on the counter. There is some assembly required - two handles to screw on with either a Phillips or slotted screwdriver, but quick to set up. The nonstick coating seems durable. Heating control range is adequate - from Warm, 200 to 400deg F. The grease tray is not removable, but is built right into the side of the griddle. It's easy to remove the grease with a paper towel from this small recessed tray area.

This mini griddle heats up quickly and cooking performance is excellent. We didn't detect any hot spots; everything cooked evenly. Don't let the size fool you - this is not a wimpy griddle. In fact, we've had to reduce the temperature somewhat from what we expected would be needed to cook most foods. There is a handy temperature chart in the product flyer. It's ideal for breakfast foods, but we've also cooked burgers, wieners and poultry, as well as sandwiches. You can do four grilled cheese sandwiches or French toast on it. That's four (average size) slices of bread and they cover the cooking area completely. With larger slices of homemade bread, you'd get two on the cooking surface.

You can fry four eggs, or two along with two slices of ham or four of bacon/sausage. When it comes to chicken breasts, three large or four small; or four burgers. We also did two medium pancakes on it, but you could do four smaller ones. Also suitable for two large chops or medium size steaks, basically anything you usually fry for one or two persons. However, when cooking on a grill, it's harder to contain grease spatter than in a skillet, so keep that in mind. There's ample room for frying/shaping my husband's veggie-loaded western sandwich egg mixture - so that's a bonus.

Cleaning is super easy. With heating control removed, you can fully immerse it in water or clean it in the dishwasher. I hand washed it because it's so quick to clean and dishwasher detergents can be harsh on nonstick over time. That's just my preference; according to Presto, you can wash it in the dishwasher.

Overall Impression

The Liddle Griddle® is light and compact, saves room on the counter and is a breeze to clean. It's ideal for one or two persons and also a very good choice for dorm rooms, seniors or those with limited counter space. It's also a good travel appliance for breakfast, snacks or meals in an RV.

It certainly is ample for two persons for most servings; we only had to do a second batch for pancakes, but they cooked more quickly than with our current griddle. For those with problem hands, it's extremely light to handle for cleaning. And with this size, even when boxed, it takes little storage space.

Performance is excellent; there were no problems detected. The only thing that could improve this small griddle is tiny rubber/silicone inserts to make the feet nonslip. As is, because it's so light, it could possibly move too easily on the counter, though we didn't have a problem.

With the exception of small contact grill/griddle models, most electric griddles are family-sized and take considerable counter space. Compact griddles for one or two are hard to find, so the Liddle Griddle is unique. And with retail pricing mostly in the $30 range, this is an extremely good buy. I gave it top rating for compact design, performance and value. It would make a nice gift for boomers, college students or those just starting out on their own.
