Water Purifier - Definition and Use

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The word 'purifier' can be very misleading as it is used in the most general sense in the marketplace when it comes to water filtration products and appliances. Often, a manufacturer will attach the word 'purifier' to the title of their product, adding to the confusion. Therefore, the term purifier is not a guarantee that a certain product is highly effective in purifying water.

For water to be entirely purified and 'pure', it would have to be totally free from all bacteria, microbes, toxins, microorganisms, sediment, chemicals and other contaminants. Water purification systems that come close are reverse osmosis and water distillation. For this reason, consumers should be proactive to find out exactly what a given water 'purifier' is able to remove from water, before buying. This information is usually available from the manufacturer. Every water filtration product has its limits when it comes to water purification and you should know how effective a given water filter is expected to be.

In general, water 'purifiers' can apply to any type of water filtration system including active carbon filters, UV Ultraviolet filtration systems, carbon-filtered water pitchers, faucet-installed carbon filters, water distillers, reverse osmosis systems, chemically-treated and municipal chlorinating water processes.

The bottom line: Water purifiers leave nothing but pure water, something most products or systems cannot do. Water filtration incorporates many types of water treatment and filtering products and appliances. Chose a water filtration unit based on what you want it to remove from the water and review the effectiveness of certain products and what they are designed to do, to make sure you are buying the best kind for your water's condition.
