Definition: A rotary cutter is a very sharp cutting wheel that can turn freely on the end of a handle. There are various styles of rotary cutters with different applications. The most common is a pizza cutter which has a larger wheel (usually non-removable), and it's sole purpose is slicing pizza. For more about pizza cutters, read my tips on buying a pizza cutter.
Another style of rotary cutter is smaller than a pizza cutter and is shown in the illustration. It is used for easily and quickly cutting through material, especially through several layers of straight pieces; or for cutting/trimming craft papers. When used for either material or craft papers, a rotary cutter should be used along with a specially designed cutting board, to protect surfaces below the item you are cutting.
Rotary cutters usually have a removable/changeable blade as they can quickly become dull, especially when cutting paper. While a rotary cutter isn't ideal for cutting into corners or following a curved fabric pattern, they do make short work when many layers are being cut and cutting is in a straight line. These cutters come in various sizes, quality and prices.
You don't have to be a quilter, sewer or crafter to benefit from using a rotary cutter. If you like to clip things out of newspapers and magazines or trim photos, you would find a small rotary cutter (and cutting board) very handy.
