Spring-Action Stainless Steel Scoops - Handier For More Than Ice Cream

A Must-Have Kitchen Gadget

By Mariette Mifflin, About.com

Stainless steel spring-action scoops are handy in the kitchen, for more than dispensing ice cream. Several sizes are available and the three shown here are 1", 1-1/2" and 2".

The largest 2" size is probably the most common you'll find and usually is used for ice cream dispensing. It can also serve mashed potatoes, poultry dressing, squash, and many desserts that can be scooped. I've also used it to drop batter to fill butter tart shells, cupcakes and muffin cups.

The middle size, at 1-1/2" is small for ice cream and mashed potato serving, but the children really like these little white mounds on their plates. It can also be used for smaller muffin tins, meat balls, dumplings, and large drop cookies.

The smallest one at 1" is ideal for dropping cookie batter on the sheet. It could also be used for melon balls and small 'drop' meat balls for stews, soups or sauces. Using these to make meat balls can save considerable time. And drop cookies are a snap with these scoops.

When buying these scoops, look for good quality stainless steel, 18/8 or 18/10 for durability and ease of cleaning, and don't be afraid to try out the mechanism, which should have a very smooth operation. They are generally very easy to clean and can go into the dishwasher.
