The Bottom Line

The Starfrit Can Opener is easier on the hands to use, economical and it does a good clean job of removing the tin lid. However, more care is needed handling the opened tin, but if being easy on the hands is important to you, this is a good choice.

Guide Review - Starfrit 93112 Mightican Manual Can Opener Review

November 17, 2010
Though I recognized the brand, I was a little skeptical about how well the Starfrit manual can opener would perform because it's different and departs from the traditional when it comes to opening a tin of food. While other can openers work their way around the top surface of the can to cut through and open the sealed lid, the Starfrit opener seats on the top of the tin, but cuts from the side to remove the whole top of the can that includes the sealed lid. The opener also holds the lid, till you release it over a garbage bin. There's no chance of it falling into the food, or having to handle and remove a lid that has sharp edges.

Clean operation is this opener's best feature, but I also found that when you factor in hand strain, the Starfrit is more comfortable and requires less effort to turn. In fact, cutting operation is very smooth, so the handle turns easily. And that means a lot if you have problem hands. Where seating an opener on a tin sometimes requires a second (or third) try, this one seems to seat very well and only occasionally requires a second try.

On the downside, the opened tin requires more care handling than with other openers since it leaves a tin that now has a very sharp edge at the top of the can, rather than a sharp edge on the lid.
