Definition: A freezer is a large home appliance that keeps its contents just below the freezing temperature. Freezers are electric and can be plugged into a standard household receptacle. A freezer is used for storing and extending the life of certain foods. There are various freezer capacity sizes on the market.

There are basically two styles of freestanding freezers - chest and upright models, plus many refrigerators come with a freezer compartment. Buying considerations vary per type of freezer; read Freezer 101 - From Buying to Caring for a Freezer to learn more about buying a freezer.

Freezers have the longest lifespan of any home appliance, with most models having an expected lifecycle of twenty years for chest models and shorter for uprights, especially self-defrost models.

Not all foods can be successfully frozen and the length of time recommended for freezer storage will also vary depending on the type of food. Consult frozen food guides for more details. How frozen foods are packaged will also affect their quality and lifespan while stored in a freezer. Compare Prices
