This vintage wire whisk is a very interesting kitchen collectible. First, because the wire whisk is very small, only 2" in diameter and the full length of the tool is only 9.25" long. Secondly, it has a push-drill or push-down spring action making it very unique, since you don't often see this type of operation in modern kitchen tools.

Often called treens, vintage utensils like this wire whisk were quite common in kitchens decades ago, and many are still quite serviceable today. Most antique kitchen tools have green enamel-painted handles, but this particular model has a natural wooden one. The size of this particular tool is just right for a coffee cup and it makes a great frother for today's specialty coffees.

Although its operation is excellent, the problem with many of these kitchen utensils is that their construction materials were not resistant to rust and not as much attention went into sealing the handle joints or crevices, making them more susceptible to harboring bacteria.

If you own or acquire one of these and you want to use in your kitchen, I would recommend giving it a very thorough cleaning and completely drying it immediately after use. I would love to see new retro tools modeled after this one, but made with durable stainless steel. These old kitchen utensils are neat collectibles and such fun to try out.
