Question: What's a Knife Steel

What is a knife steel and what is it used for? Is a knife steel an essential tool?

Answer: A steel is an essential cutlery knife care tool. It is basically a steel rod with a handle, that is used for regular knife edge tune-ups. You can purchase a knife steel by itself where cutlery knives are sold, but a steel is often included in knife block or carving knife sets. Overtime, you could eventually wear down a knife steel, but it's most unlikely - this knife care tool is extremely durable. The quality of a knife steel is not readily discernible, so when in doubt, buy a known brand.
