The Bottom Line
The Oster/Sunbeam HDX23 Programmable Coffee Maker does brew a great cup of coffee, pours well and has all the best features you'd want with a coffee maker. However, I do find it bulky and filling the water reservoir was easier using my faucet spray attachment. That aside, I would recommend it for its great features, brewing ability and moderate pricing.

Overall, the Sunbeam HDX23 does have a nice design with the back-lit clock/timer and black/chrome finish, but it is rather tall and bulky and requires a fair amount of space when locating it on your counter. I also found that I had to turn it and slide it forward completely in order to access the water fill area which is at the top back of the maker. Using my faucet spray was the best way to fill without splashing. Don't overfill, there is an overflow opening at the back which is not immediately noticeable, until you see water on the counter.As for brewing performance, it makes a great cup of coffee and the carafe is well designed for good pouring and handling. Capacity of 12 cups is perfect for a family or entertaining. The Brew Strength Selector, Brew 'n Pause and programmable features are very handy.
I just love the clock/timer that shows how old the coffee is - this is not a standard feature with most coffee makers, and you can adjust the temperature of the warming plate to keep it at your preferred temperature. The back-lit clock makes a nice kitchen night light and clock.
The audible on/off signal doesn't sound like much, but it's very handy as a reminder that you did put on a fresh pot of coffee, or serves as a last call while it's still hot.
Also very convenient, it comes with its own permanent filter which seems larger than standard filters. The 2 hour shut-off is a must for safety reasons.
The rating was downgraded due to the bulky design and need for extra care when filling.
