How the Keurig Platinum Performed
This is the most recent B70 series Platinum Brewer - the B78, which has some noticeable differences from the original Platinum released about three years ago. Today's model has a redesigned water reservoir that is bigger at 72 oz and has a partial hinged lid, giving you more options for filling with water. Note that you can still lift and remove the reservoir or just take the whole lid off to fill if you wish. I like the hinged lid; it seems to work very well and I especially love the extra capacity.
There are still five cup options on this model, which I find very handy because I prefer my coffee a little weaker than my better half and you can adjust that by the size of cup you use. The extra small cup size is ideal for brewing over ice or for those who love an extra bold cup. And we use the largest often for travel mugs. The drip tray removes to accommodate a tall travel mug. So the B70 series really covers all the bases as far as cup choices.
I found it rather easy to program and set preferences and the overall appearance of this brewer is very nice. Except for the water reservoir differences and unless there are upgrades within the brewer itself that are not visible, the rest is similar to what I remember from the previous upgrade. It might be a tad faster at brewing than our previous model, or that could be just because it's new and has no scale build-up. It brews great tasting hot coffee at a nice drinking temperature (default setting) and it does it fairly quickly.
As for coffee flavor, K-cup coffee taste and single serve convenience is hard to beat. We've come across the odd drip coffee maker that delivers near coffee shop taste, but no amount of varying coffee blends or grinding our own beans has achieved quite the same flavor and boldness we get using a Keurig K-cup brewer. And of course, the ease of brewing is very nice.
Some things that make K-cup brewers stand out from the rest of the single-serve pack is the ability to use a My K-Cup Filter with it. We use our own coffee blends occasionally with this specially-designed filter - it saves a bundle and delivers flavorful coffee. The K-cups are also readily available which is convenient and having five cup options gives you the most choice.
We've had other Keurig brewers in the past and I know durability is a concern for many including us. Though this Keurig will signal that it needs to be descaled at some point, you have to be proactive with descaling and clean it before it signals to do so. Scale build-up will vary depending on use and the mineral content in your water, so a generic 'descale' routine isn't sufficient for all. We've found that also cleaning the K-Cup holder, exit needle and funnel regularly helps to keep the brewer working longer. You'll find cleaning instructions in the manual.
Overall Impression and Related Resources
As mentioned above, routine cleaning is the answer to a longer brewer life. The price of this brewer may be an issue for some. For those who usually frequent coffee shops and decide to brew Keurig coffee at home instead, it wouldn't take long to pay off this brewer. Then there's also the avoided commute to the coffee shop. So it really depends what this level of convenience (and taste) is worth to you. No problems were detected during testing - it delivered as advertised and I'm being optimistic with the rating. It will be adjusted should concerns surface. Note that the brewer in the image is the B70 model.
