Rotisserie Care & Maintenance

By Mariette Mifflin, About.com

Rotisseries are becoming a very popular roasting alternative, but how easy are they to clean? Here are some tips on care and maintenance of rotisseries.

  • Rotisseries require considerably more storage space.
  • When preparing poultry, 'truss' the bird (tie up the wings and feet).
  • Cover the removable reflector panel and drip tray with foil
  • Operate only on a stable surface and away from overhead cabinets; units emit a lot of heat while cooking.
  • For safety reasons, keep small children away from unit while cooking
  • When meat is done, turn unit off, and use oven mitts to remove hot spit and transfer meat to a serving platter. This is a two-handed operation.
  • Cleaning is easier if done soon after cooking.
  • Drain off excess grease from drip tray.
  • Check your manual to confirm what parts are dishwasher safe. Many rotisseries have these features, making cleaning even easier.
  • Clean remaining unit and store.

Check your manual for optional accessories, like steamer baskets, etc that might enhance your roasting convenience. File your manual, parts list and warranty information for future reference.

Generally, the consensus is that, given the juicy succulent meals that these rotisseries produce, the cleaning required is well worth it.
