With a lithium ion battery, the cordless Bosch MIXXO Immersion Blender promises to run up to twenty minutes on a charge, to crush ice, blend and cut onions and other foods. It also has a companion chopper that adds a food processing function to this kitchen tool. But being cordless, would it have enough power to handle blending and chopping tasks, let alone crush ice?

How MIXXO Performed
April 12, 2009 Mixxo has a slim and lightweight design that is very comfortable to hold and operate. The dual button operation is a good safety feature though it can seem annoying. However, you can let go of the safety button once the unit is running. The most impressive feature of this blender is the power - strong, constant and comparable to corded models. Since it only took seconds to blend, mix or chop (pulsing), the charge held strong even after three recipes one after the other, and it never indicated a low battery. When not in use, MIXXO sat in the charging station.
MIXXO does crush ice and easily blends smoothies and iced drinks, but ice crushing is inconsistent. It's so fast that if you try to crush all the large pieces of ice, you risk liquidizing the rest. In other words, blend too long and you'll have no ice left. A gentle up and down motion is best when blending regular size ice cubes to allow the blades to cut through, but it's still very fast.
Cordless is a fantastic feature - you can cream soup right in the pot on the stove or chop food in a bowl, without a cord dragging across a mess on the counter. It has a different style of foot that reduces splashing and this was noticeable, especially when blending hot foods.
There was no problem chopping onions and soft foods with the blender foot and the chopper accessory made quick work of hard vegetables. The MIXXO attaches quickly to the chopper unit and it makes the blender even more functional for chopping nuts and hard vegetables. There was no drag on the motor when using the chopper.
Overall Impression
I'm impressed with the constant power, speed and function of this hand blender and chopper. Although ice crushing is inconsistent, it's nice to know it can crush ice in frozen drinks - a function most hand blenders cannot perform. Run time is outstanding and the blender foot comes off easily for cleaning. As far as durability is concerned, lithium ion batteries generally have a long life and the unit is well made with a stainless steel foot and blade. At a retail price of around $100 it's a little pricey, but it is cordless and has more function than you'd expect from an immersion blender. It's also fun to use. Being portable, MIXXO would be a handy blender to take to the outdoor kitchen or to the patio when entertaining.
