The 11 Best Air Purifiers of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

We did the work, so you can enjoy fresher air

Assortment of air purifiers sitting on a wood table

The Spruce / Henry Wortock

Simply put, anyone can benefit from owning an air purifier. Air purifiers both circulate the air in your home and clean it by removing common pollutants like dust, pollen, pet hair, and smoke. Many have automatic settings as well, that turn up the fans when the appliance notices that you're cooking or have a window open in the middle of spring, so you can have fresher air without lifting a finger.

While you may not be able to see the cleaner air like you would see the crumb-less path of a freshly vacuumed floor or the wet swipes on a freshly wiped-down countertop, a good air purifier can leave your air smelling better and your nose clearer. We've tested 66 air purifiers in The Lab—using an air quality monitor to evaluate effectiveness and a decibel meter to evaluate noise levels. During our tests, we also evaluated ease of setup, value, design, and features to truly understand the best options inside and out. After formal lab testing, we took our favorites home to see how they work in real life, against the likes of furry dogs and months of constant usage.

In our experience, there are actually a dozen or so air purifiers on the market that are worth setting up in your home, from brands like Rabbit Air, Coway, Blueair, Dyson, Honeywell, and Levoit. Some of the most expensive options (costing nearly $700) will connect to your phone or double as a fan; the most inexpensive air purifiers (costing as little as $50) will give you just multiple fan settings and a quick readout of your air quality at any given time, your PM 2.5 rating (particulate matter less than or equal to 2.5 microns) and TVOC levels (total volatile organic compounds).

What to Know Before You Get Started

  • Air purifiers have different filter types to target dust, smoke, and other contaminants. To find the right air purifier for your home, it's helpful to know what to look for in a filter. Your air purifier can have a: pre-filter for pet hair and lint; HEPA filter for pollen, dust mites, and pet allergens; and an activated carbon filter for gases, VOCs, odors, and smoke.
  • It's also key to consider the size of the room you're putting the air purifier in. Air purifiers can be designed for rooms as little as 100 square feet (great for apartments) and as large as 1,000 square feet (ideal for open-concept living areas).
  • A CADR (clean air delivery rate) spec measures how quickly an air purifier removes contaminants in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Melissa Homer, Chief Cleaning Officer at MaidPro and member of The Spruce's Cleaning Review Board, says the CADR is important since it determines how truly effective the air purifier will be in your space. A higher rate equals faster purification in larger rooms. You should consider the ⅔ rule, according to Energy Star, which explains to look for a “CADR that is at least ⅔ the square footage of the space” you want to purify.

You can learn even more about these features and need-to-know shopping tips for air purifiers in our What to Look for in an Air Purifier section below.

  • Great app controls

  • Three-stage filter system

What We Don't Like
  • High mode can be noisy

  • No alert when it's time to change the filter

With its overall efficiency, quiet operation, feature-packed design, and smart home compatibility, the Levoit Core 400S remains our top pick out of all the air purifiers we've tested. This purifier relies on an H13 True HEPA filter, just one part of its three-stage filtration system. A pre-filter focuses on filtering larger debris, such as lint and pet hair. The H13 True HEPA filter is capable of targeting 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses, and filters a minimum of 99.97 percent of air particles with a 0.3-micron size, such as pollen. Finally, the carbon filter filters pollutants such as smoke, VOCs, and various odors.

We were able to test the Levoit Core 300S in our most recent round of testing and found it just as effective at purifying air as its larger counterpart. The only major difference between the 300S and 400S is the appropriate coverage area for each: 219 square feet and 403 square feet, respectively. (If you are adding an air purifier to a smaller room, you'll want to opt for the 300S.) Both have the same remote monitoring capabilities and can read and track a room's real-time PM 2.5 rating.

We appreciated that both models came assembled, only requiring the removal of the plastic cover from the filter. It was also easy to connect the air purifiers to the app by scanning a QR code. You can access plenty of features via the digital display, but the app also has user-friendly controls and offers access to even more features, such as setting timers and schedules. If you prefer to use voice commands over pressing buttons, this purifier is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant. The different control options make the Levoit Core 400S one of the more accessible models on our list.

You also shouldn't worry about this air purifier being an eyesore, since it has a sleek silhouette. In terms of its noise level, this purifier has a sleep mode for quiet operation while you rest, but we found it's still incredibly quiet on its low mode. The high mode was slightly louder, but we did not think it would disturb a TV show. However, the high mode might not be ideal for every sleeper, depending on your white noise preference.

All in all, both the 300S and 400S are solid picks for effectively purifying a room's air. We're just slightly partial to the 400S given its compatibility with larger rooms.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using the 400S in one of our homes for six months, we found that it eliminated a damp smell in the home's entryway. We tested moving it from room to room, and it left the air feeling noticeably cleaner in each space. It would even change the air quality status to poor when smoke occurred while cooking. Our only complaint is that we wish this model would alert us when it's time to change the filter.

  • Very effective at circulating air

  • Easy to replace filters

What We Don't Like
  • Not as quiet as other models

  • Not as compact as other models

It wasn’t much of a surprise to us that Honeywell’s InSight HEPA HPA5300 Air Purifier was a popular model during our testing. Honeywell has been a leader in the air quality industry for years and we’ve had the opportunity to test several models of the brand’s air purifiers. The InSight series features an air quality indicator light that allows you to know the quality of your home’s air with just a glance at the appliance: green for good, orange for moderate, and red for poor. We loved using the HPA5300 on its auto mode, which automatically adjusts the fan to keep your air at a good (green) level.

It’s easy to set up this model and plug it in wherever you want in your home. It’s a slightly larger model than some of the other air purifiers in our roundup, but we think that’s a small price to pay for its efficacy. This air purifier features up to three levels of filtration: a pre-filter to reduce household odors and VOCs, a HEPA filter, and an optional enhanced odor filter (sold separately to tackle kitchen odors, pet odors, or home renovation odors). During our testing, we found that this air purifier was able to reduce the smells in the room and make significant improvements overall.

Now, because of this air purifier’s powerful filtration and fan, it is slightly louder than other options on the market. However, it still registers below 60 decibels even at its highest level (turbo mode), so you should only have to increase your television volume slightly if you choose to use this in a family room. You should only have to replace the HEPA filter once a year, and it's available in a pack of three for around $75, which is pretty average for replacement filter prices. While the upfront cost of this air purifier may feel expensive at over $300, we think it's a great option if you want to understand your home’s air without incorporating another smart gadget into your home.

How It Performed Long-Term

This air purifier made a huge difference in our team member's home when her mother came to visit. It helped minimize her allergies to their cat and even automatically turned on when she sprayed hair spray close by. We've also noticed that it's wonderful at minimizing kitchen smells and has left the air feeling fresher.

  • Affordable maintenance costs

  • 360-degree filtration

What We Don't Like
  • Not the most aesthetically pleasing option

Air purifiers are a major investment, especially when you add the cost of maintenance on top of the upfront purchase. We were not only very pleased with the Clorox Large Room Air Purifier’s performance, but we also thought that its under-$200 price tag paired with a reasonable filter replacement and wattage cost per year make it an excellent choice for homes looking for a cost-effective product. Notably, the filter only costs $60 to replace and energy costs about $45 per year, according to our calculations.

You can expect a frustration-free experience when turning on this air purifier and setting it up. We had no issues making our way through the different settings, thanks to the intuitive control panel. We also loved that this model has a 360-degree filtration system, so you can feel confident that all of the room’s air is being effectively circulated. While this model certainly isn't one of the most stylish options we've tested, we think its effectiveness outweighs its utilitarian design.

On the digital display, you can also see the room’s current PM 2.5 rating, and a small color-coded light illuminates from green to maroon to indicate air quality. Best of all, we found that this air purifier never went over 60 decibels in noise level, so it could be a great option for a bedroom or even a family entertainment room. During testing, our air monitor readings always showed significant improvement in quality post-purification, and we also noticed that the testing room smelled better as well, thanks to the carbon filter. Overall, we think that the high-quality True HEPA filter on this model paired with its performance and thoughtful interface makes it an excellent, affordable air purifier.

What We Don't Like
  • Vented doors are difficult to re-attach

The Dyson Purifier Cool TP07 Smart Air Purifier has a heftier price tag than other models we tested, but it certainly purifies and cools your air, has a unique design, and is compatible with Alexa, Siri, and Google Home. It relies on an H13 HEPA filter, and we were impressed by its ability to dramatically improve the air quality within five to 10 minutes, as well as swiftly remove smoke. It has an impressive range of 10 speed settings. We noticed no noise when it was set to level one, and only a fan-like sound on level 10. It has a night mode, too, which initiates quieter operation and a dimmed light display for disruption-free sleep.

This air purifier can oscillate, and we found its movements very smooth. The long, sturdy power cord is super convenient if you're hoping to set up this model a bit away from an outlet, and removing the vented doors to check on the filter’s cleanliness is effortless. Though, we did encounter a little difficulty getting them back on.

You can also use one of the compatible smart assistants (Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, or Google Home) with voice commands to control the Dyson TP07. Or, you can opt to use the included remote, which is magnetic and fits into a little notch at the top of the purifier for easy storage. In our experience, it was easy to connect the air purifier to the app, and we appreciated all the useful information it displays, such as room temperature, humidity, and air quality history. The auto-purify setting easily detected nail polish being used from quite a distance during our testing.

All in all, this combo machine is hard to beat, despite the hefty price tag. Its quiet operation and very intuitive features make it a worthy splurge.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using this all-in-one purifier and fan at home for six months, we were completely convinced of its efficacy. We loved keeping it on the auto setting and appreciated how efficiently the unit detected poor air quality.

  • Four stages of filtration

  • Reduced room odors

What We Don't Like
  • Not very effective on low setting

  • Loud on highest setting

Although we love our furry friends, it’s not a secret that they expose our household air to various pollutants. This air purifier from Black+Decker is a great option for pet owners who want to ensure their household air is as healthy as possible for both themselves and their fur babies. Equipped with an electrostatic precipitator, this purifier uses an electrostatic charge to eliminate particles such as dust, dander, and mold spores. On top of that, it also has three other filter levels: the pre-filter, an ozone filter, and a HEPA and activated carbon combination filter.

We had no trouble getting this air purifier set up for use, and its touchscreen display makes it easy to operate. We noticed during testing that the lowest fan setting didn’t offer a significant difference in clearing our testing room of its smoky smell—although, the air quality monitor did pick up a significant change once the air had been purified. Once we bumped this purifier up to its highest setting, we noticed better results when it came to both smell and air quality readings. We will note that this air purifier is pretty loud on its highest fan setting, but we’d consider it a reasonable amount of white noise to fall asleep to if you opt to use this model in a bedroom.

When we examined the filters after our testing rounds, we did find a few traces of pet hair, which means the pre-filter did a great job of capturing any larger contaminants. Overall, we think the multiple levels of filtration on this model make it stand out as a pet-friendly unit compared to the options we’ve previously tested.

How It Performed Long-Term

After two months of use at home, we're very impressed by this air purifier's odor-eliminating abilities. We used it in a closet to keep the smell of soiled puppy pads at bay and it completely delivered. We no longer had to hold our breath to open the door and dispose of pads or paper towels from indoor accidents. We prefer to keep this air purifier on level two because it's quite loud when operating on levels three and four. Despite the large size of this air purifier, we love the slick design that has caster wheels and carrying handles for added mobility.

  • Compact footprint

What We Don't Like
  • Filter cover could be more secure

  • Could be quieter on the highest setting

  • No pet hair or VOC filtration

We ran this AROEVE air purifier for a full 10 minutes on each available mode and marveled at how effectively it improved the room’s air quality after only two to three minutes. Pairing its efficiency with its sleep mode and low-profile design, this is a perfect fit for small rooms, like an office or family room. It has an H13 True HEPA filter and relies on UV technology to further cleanse the air. (Note that this model lacks both pet hair and VOC filtration, though.) And while we felt that the filter cover wasn’t as secure as it could be, we appreciated how smoothly we were able to slide the filter in and out.

We found that, overall, this purifier operates quietly. But in its high mode, it can sound as loud as a hair dryer. However, one reason we love this air purifier is its sleep mode, which keeps the unit running at a particularly quiet level when it’s time to hop on a virtual meeting. It also has a straightforward display, in which different colors of light let you effortlessly read the air quality. The light display can be either dimmed or completely turned off, and you can set this model to automatically turn off after eight, 12, or 14 hours. In terms of design, this is a compact and minimalist-looking air purifier, so it should blend into any room.

How It Performed Long-Term

We ran the Aroeve MK04 for at least six hours during the day on auto and set it to night mode in the evening. We've noticed that the purifier removes dust, allergens, and other particles. We also appreciate that the purifier's light system reports when the air is clean, and we enjoy using the night mode because of its quiet operation. We recommend the purifier to anyone who's looking for a reliable and low-maintenance model at a reasonable price.

  • Customizable filter option

  • Very powerful

What We Don't Like
  • Not cost effective

The Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier ups the ante even more with a low decibel level (think, whisper-quiet) on all settings and an even larger coverage area than its predecessor. You still get six levels of filtration with a customizable filter; choose between a germ defense, pet allergy, toxin absorber, or odor remover. Plus, the Artists Series is also an option for this model, so you can make your model even more aesthetically pleasing.

While this model may seem intimidating with its number of filters and smart capabilities, like remote monitoring, we found it’s actually very easy to use. We appreciate that the protective plastic cover labels each of the indicator lights on the unit, so you’re familiar with the settings before removing the packaging. The filter cover panel also has a list of each of the filters on the inside with the order that they go in, so you never have to wonder which filter nests in the other.

While we had a hard time discerning if the air purifier was even working on its silent (lowest) setting—props to the quiet operation—it did a great job of purifying the air in our testing room. We only noticed minimal lingering scents, but the haze from our incense had completely cleared. This model’s performance was also just as powerful, if not more on its highest level. The light sensor seemed to be a great feature, if this purifier was placed in a bedroom, since it automatically dims or brightens based on light detection, and we also appreciate the automatic mode which adjusts operation levels based on room readings.

Despite how impressive this air purifier is, we do want to acknowledge that it's one of the most expensive options we’ve tested. It’s also more expensive to maintain, with replacement filters costing around $115 and its energy cost per year coming to about $95. However, if you want a powerful air purifier that can be controlled completely through your smartphone, then this model may be worth the splurge and additional costs over time.

How It Performed Long-Term

We love that we can tell the Rabbit Air A3 is working in our home because the furniture nearby is less dusty. This model has been in one of our homes for two months, and we've appreciated the intuitive app controls which allow us to remotely adjust settings. The night mode is still slightly too bright, especially if you prefer a pitch-black room, but we think it wouldn't be a concern if you place this model in a common room.

What We Don't Like
  • Some initial setup issues

If aesthetics and smart capabilities are at the top of your list of priorities when purchasing any home appliance, then the Coway Airmega IconS is a great choice. For starters, its neutral finish makes it look more like a retro radio than an air purifier, so it can easily blend into any space in your home. This model is also packed with unique features, including a wireless charging top plate, which can charge any Qi-compatible device. It’s also Wi-Fi equipped, so the corresponding IoCare smartphone app can remotely monitor air quality statuses. You can even set a timer and voice control the purifier with Amazon Alexa or Google Home Assistant.

We had the opportunity to test this specific unit inside one of our homes for five months, and it did not disappoint with its purification abilities. We opted to run this purifier on smart mode, which automatically adjusts the fan level based on surrounding air quality. Of all the improvements we experienced, our team member noted that she felt her asthma and allergy symptoms diminished, and any smells around her home also dissipated faster. We will note that this model was slightly difficult to set up and pair with the smartphone app. However, once we got around the initial setup pains, we didn't experience any other frustrations with its functionality.

Plus, you can even view your home’s air quality at a glance by simply checking the display light, which is color-coded to match the air quality. This Coway model is also at the higher end of air purifiers that we’ve tested, but we think its efficiency, smart settings, and pain-free operation justify the initial expense.

What We Don't Like
  • Large footprint

Finding the right air purifier for a bedroom can be challenging, especially if you're a light sleeper who prefers a near-silent room. We were impressed by the Blueair Blue Pure 411i Max's quiet operation during our testing, which only registered at 53 decibels on its highest setting and consistently registered 48 decibels on its lowest setting. Between 30 and 50 decibels is considered average room noise, so you can count on this air purifier to efficiently clean your room's air while staying quiet. Plus, it has a night mode, which the manufacturer claims can operate as low as 18 decibels, although we did not get a chance to measure this level in our lab.

Aside from its quiet operation, we also loved this air purifier's sleek design, which would make it suitable for a nursery or adult's bedroom. This air purifier is controlled through one power button that can cycle through all of its fan levels and brightness modes, so you can completely turn off all lights at night. You can also choose to connect the purifier to the Blueair app and remotely control the purifier, as well as monitor PM 2.5 levels in your home. The app also provides user insights like filter lifetime tracking, and you can even control the purifier through voice commands.

While our PM 2.5 and TVOC readings for this purifier reflect its effectiveness, we were also able to notice a distinct improvement in our testing room's smell after leaving this air purifier turned on for 30 minutes. It not only brought the room's air levels back down to safe levels but also made it more comfortable to breathe the air. Our one complaint about the Blueair Blue Pure 411i Max is its size. It's meant to sit on the floor, which we recognize isn't ideal for every room size or layout. We wish it was just slightly smaller to sit on a dresser or bedside table. However, this aesthetic concern does not negate its overall, impressive performance.

What We Like
  • Helpful in-app features

  • Four stages of filtration

  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa

What We Don't Like
  • Boxy shape

  • Extra step to set up app location

Most of the air purifiers we tested exhibited a considerable difference in noise level from the lowest setting to the highest. While the Winix 9800's turbo mode was considerably loud, the other settings were far more impressive, registering from 43 decibels on a low setting to 57 decibels on a high one. We found that running the unit on medium mode offered the optimum balance between efficiency and quiet. We also were impressed that the air purifier conveniently switches to sleep mode and operates even more quietly once it senses a room has gone dark.

You can control the air purifier via the unit's digital display, the app, or voice commands since it's compatible with Amazon Alexa. We had a difference of opinion as to the app's efficacy: in at-home testing, we struggled to get the app to set up and preferred controlling the unit manually. On the other hand, while the app was a bit of a hassle to set up in lab testing, it felt intuitive to use once we did. We appreciated that we could check in on the air quality, set schedules, join the filter club, review the air quality history, and view the filter life.

We were slightly disappointed by the air purifier's rather boxy appearance. (Though, at least it is still clean-cut and sleek.) However, the design aesthetic is not a deal-breaker for us. Removing and cleaning the filter is easy, and this air purifier has four stages of filtration. First comes the pre-filter, which targets larger particles and debris. Then there’s the activated carbon filter, which tackles VOCs and odors, followed by the True HEPA filter, which filters 99.9 percent of allergens in the air. Finally, there’s the PlasmaWave Air Cleaning Technology.

We thought the Winix 9800's filtration system did a great job improving the air quality in our testing—and it did so in only five to 10 minutes. It did not perform as well at picking up pet hair in our lab, but we will point out that most air purifiers are not designed to actually suck up pet hair. However, we still think this unit is a great option for anyone looking for an especially quiet air purifier.

How It Performed Long-Term

Our team member who used this purifier in her home for six months noticed she coughed less after keeping it on its lowest setting every day. Upon further use, we don't think this model is the best option for anyone with limited space. It is rather bulky, and we had to rearrange furniture to fit it.

However, we found the Bionaire BAP0041UVWH True HEPA 360-degree Air Purifier offered the perfect balance of effective air purification and thoughtful onboard features. While this air purifier was one of the louder models during our latest round of testing (when on its highest setting), it was very effective at reducing PM 2.5 and TVOC in our testing room. Plus, it's easy to set up this air purifier. Simply remove it from the box and protective plastic packaging. The filter can be replaced by twisting the bottom of the air purifier off.

While we were not able to measure its effectiveness in our testing, we are intrigued by the UV light and ionization features that this air purifier has. The manufacturer claims that the UV light can reduce up to 99.9 percent of viruses, bacteria, and mold. The ionizer binds small particles, making them easier to initially capture. While this model doesn't have any remote monitoring settings or live particulate readings, you can set a timer for 8-hour periods during the day or night. You can also turn on a nightlight, so this air purifier could be great for a child's bedroom or bathroom.

We did struggle to initially identify how the fan settings were displayed, but we discovered a faint Roman numeral light beside the fan button, which displays a "I," "II," or "III" in conjunction with the fan speeds. That said, this air purifier may be difficult to monitor in direct light, given the faint display lights. On top of all the thoughtful features we've explained, we also think this air purifier's handle makes it great for transporting between rooms. While it might be best functioning as a floor model, it could fit on a larger table, kitchen island, or dresser. Overall, if you're not inclined to have a smart air purifier that delivers real-time readings, this air purifier is a great compromise that still effectively cleans a room's air while offering intuitive, additional features.

How It Performed Long-Term

We've been using the Bionaire True HEPA 360 UV Air Purifier in an office setting for two months and enjoy how quiet it is on the lower settings. It has also improved the humidity and muggy feeling that the office typically has during the summer and fall months. Although the high setting is a bit too loud for a quiet office space, it is quite effective. We also love the compact design of this air purifier and the rope handle to easily move it.

Final Verdict

Out of all the air purifiers we tested, the LEVOIT Core 400S Air Purifier is our best overall. It has an all-around great design with effective air purification, intuitive app controls, quiet operation, easy setup, and attractive appearance. If you’re looking for an option with straightforward controls and instructions, and don’t mind having a model with fewer cutting-edge features, the Clorox 11010 Large Room Air Purifier is our best budget pick. It also operates quietly and has three, easy-to-use fan levels.

Other Options We Tested

Levoit Core Mini Air Purifier: While we love this air purifier for small spaces, it didn't stand up to the competition in our latest round of testing. It has a compact footprint that would make it ideal for a bedside table, but it can only purify spaces up to 178 square feet and it has a relatively short power cord, limiting its operation.

LG PuriCare 360 Single Filter Air Purifier with Clean Booster: Although this air purifier performed well during our tests, we didn't find any non-smart features that justified its $500 price tag. While the boost fan level is a nice bonus, we think you could set up an oscillating fan that accomplishes the same effect for a much cheaper price. There are also many other less-expensive air purifiers on the market with HEPA filters that accomplish the same level of purification that this machine did. It ultimately is the best option for someone looking for smart features and a stellar design, and who can find it on sale.

Shark HP102 Air Purifier with True HEPA: We enjoyed the user-friendly interface of this air purifier and appreciated how compact it is. It could easily fit on a larger nightstand or dresser. However, this model just didn't stand out against the many other machines we've tested over the past year. If you're looking for an affordable model, this air purifier could be the best for you, but we think there are other designs with more integrated features and faster filtering.

The Spruce Team Tests Air Purifiers

How We Tested the Air Purifiers

We’ve tested 66 air purifiers in The Lab and at home over the past year. While our methodology has altered slightly to consider energy consumption and filter replacement costs, all of the air purifiers we’ve tested have gone through rigorous evaluation.

In the lab, we start with the unboxing and setup process for each model and time how long it takes to review instructions and assemble any parts. We note the design of each model and where it would be best placed in a home, how obtrusive it might appear in a room, and how agreeable it seems to a typical home's decor. We also consider whether the product's additional features, such as smart capabilities, add to its appeal. Then, we use a decibel meter to measure each air purifier’s noise levels on its lowest and highest operating modes.

In our original effectiveness testing, we used five different-sized, zip-up indoor greenhouses, referred to as our “air quality testing chambers,” but we’ve evolved the methodology to use entire conference rooms based on the maximum square footage recommended by each air purifier’s manufacturer. Before turning each air purifier on, we record baseline readings of the room’s air quality using an air quality monitor and note the initial PM 2.5 (particulate matter less than or equal to 2.5 microns) and TVOC levels (total volatile organic compounds).

We then light incense, allowing it to release smoke for approximately five minutes in the room (before extinguishing it in a cup of water). While the incense smoke is still being released, we spread a mixture of sawdust, dirt, and flour to simulate common air pollutants found in a home, and we spray a room spray. We record the readings again immediately after spreading the contaminants and after 30 minutes of the contaminants being in the room, allowing the air purifier to clear the air to its best ability.

We repeat this entire test on each purifier's high mode. During the high-mode test, we also release fake pet hair as an additional contaminant. At the end of all our lab testing, we review our findings and give each model a value rating based on its performance in the lab compared to its price.

After testing the air purifiers in this controlled lab setting, we use our favorites in our own homes for six months. In addition to evaluating each purifier's performance in all the lab-tested categories, we consider how it improves our day-to-day living (if at all) and whether we notice any long-term impact on our lives.

Testing the Best Air Purifiers for Quality

What to Look for in an Air Purifier

Filter Type

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, you will notice three primary types of filters when shopping for air purifiers: pre-filters, HEPA filters, and activated carbon filters.

  • Pre-filters are the first line of defense in an air purifier's overall filtration system and they target larger particles, such as pet hair and lint.
  • HEPA filters target smaller particles. They are a pleated air filter, also known as a high-efficiency particulate air filter. They target pollen, dust mites, and pet allergens. Look for an air purifier with a “true HEPA filter” for the most effective and reliable results. True HEPA filters can capture 99.97 percent of particles with diameters of 0.3 microns or even less. Our best overall choice, the LEVOIT 400S has a T13 True HEPA filter. HEPA-type filters do not guarantee the same level of performance.
  • Activated carbon filters target gases and can help remove VOCs, odors, and smoke from the air. If you live in a region or home where you are frequently around harmful fumes, make sure the air purifier you consider has one. Our best quiet choice, the Winix 9800— has an activated carbon filter. You can also find air purifier models with activated carbon pre-filters, which combine the functionality of pre-filters with the extra strength of an activated carbon filter. Our best for pets pick, the Black+Decker BAPUV350 Air Purifier, has an activated carbon/HEPA combination filter, which has the filtration power of a HEPA filter paired with odor elimination of carbon filters.

In addition to knowing what filters are present in your chosen purifier when you're shopping, it's key to know what filter maintenance needs to be done. Some filters are washable, or you might need to stock up on replacement filters or sign up for a compatible filter subscription service to ensure long-lasting air purifier use. Melissa Homer, Chief Cleaning Officer at MaidPro and member of The Spruce's Cleaning Review Board, recommends swapping out disposable HEPA filters every three months.

Room Size

Air purifiers are similar to heaters and air conditioners in that they have coverage capacity. Most air purifier product descriptions list the room size they are intended for in square feet, so you should have an idea of the room you would like to use your device in before purchasing an air purifier.

If you plan to use your device in a large, open room, make sure the air purifier you consider is capable of properly monitoring and purifying the air across the entire space, not just a certain section. On the other hand, if you look to use your device in a smaller space, it could be a waste of money to invest in a product powerful enough to handle larger spaces. Our best for small spaces pick, the AROEVE Air Purifier for Large Rooms, quickly cleared polluted air within two to three minutes of operating during our lab tests. It could easily handle a larger room, such as a living room or kitchen, with a CADR rating above 300 CFM.

CADR Scale

CADR stands for "clean air delivery rate" and refers to the volume of air, in cubic feet, that your air purifier can clean per minute. Homer reminds us that this spec, noted in cubic feet per minute (CFM), is tested and measured by using a purifier’s highest setting to clean air of dust, smoke, and pollen. Among the products we tested that list CFM, the AROEVE (our best for small spaces pick on this list) reported an overall CADR of 300+. To experience the maximum CADR of an air purifier, you have to run it on its highest setting, which tends to be its loudest.

But while CADR is important to determine air purifier effectiveness, Homer advises not to focus solely on it. She says a lower CADR can sometimes correlate to quieter operation and a less-conspicuous design, which may be a greater priority for you, depending on your circumstances. Our best overall pick, the LEVOIT Core 400S Air Purifier, has a CADR rating of 260 CFM, which makes it not only an efficient purifier, but also a quiet option that shouldn't disturb your day-to-day routine.

Noise Level

Quiet operation is important because if you frequently use your air purifier throughout the day, it shouldn't disrupt your work, leisure time, sleep, and other day-to-day activities. As is the case with the best fans and air conditioners, some air purifiers are quieter than others, producing more noise as their levels go up. Many product descriptions note, in decibels (dB), the sound produced by the purifier, and we've listed those in every product's key specifications so you can clearly see what kind of noise you're in for.

If you are particularly sensitive or easily distracted by noises, consider a model that has a quiet or silent mode. Many also have night and sleep modes, which activate a quieter operation or dim digital display lights to create a better sleep environment. Several of our picks, including our best features option—the Bionaire True HEPA 360° Air Purifier—offer silent modes. In our testing, we found the Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier (best design) also has a silent mode that's just 44 decibels. We had to check that it was actually running because we couldn't hear any fan noises. Note that if your air purifier starts to make more noise than you consider typical, its filters may need to be cleaned, replaced, or readjusted.

Standout Features

UV Lights and Ionization

Newer air purifier models may feature UV lights, which function as a sterilization feature to eliminate bacteria that may be in the air. These models are also equipped with an ionizer, which makes the particles in the air easier to attract and capture in the filters. Our best features pick, the Bionaire True HEPA 360° Air Purifier is equipped with both a UV light and an ionizer, making it a great choice for ridding a home's air of particles while effectively sterilizing it. Keep in mind that we were not able to test the manufacturer's claims that UV light does remove 99.9 percent of all bacteria and viruses.

Smart Technology

Many of the air purifiers in our roundup feature smart technology, whether that means they can be connected to smart home hubs through Bluetooth or be controlled via a smartphone app. In addition to our best smart pick, the Coway Airmega IconS, our best for bedrooms pick, the Blueair Blue Pure 411i Max, also connects to a smartphone app where you can monitor PM 2.5 levels, change the fan speed, adjust the air purifier's lights and turn on a child lock to prevent curious kids from accidentally turning off the unit.

Adjustable Lights

While not all air purifiers have display lights, some units light up to indicate the fan level, or simply display that the unit is turned on and functioning. If you're using an air purifier in a bedroom, it can be especially helpful if that model has the capability to turn off all lights, for sleepers who prefer a completely dark space. However, some air purifiers also come with nightlight features, making them great for children's rooms and nurseries. Again, our aptly chosen best features model, the Bionaire True HEPA 360° Air Purifier, has a nightlight feature that will illuminate a ring around the air purifier.

Filter Subscription Service

To enjoy your air purifier's effectiveness year-round, it's essential to maintain the filters. Some have reusable or washable filters that you can easily vacuum or rinse, but other models require swapping out the filters for brand-new ones every so often. Notably, some brand's provide a filter subscription service that makes this task easier. Instead of reminding yourself to add a new filter to your cart, the brand ensures that a new one arrives at your door when you need it.

FAQ
  • Where should you place an air purifier?

Where you should place your air purifier varies. You may want to place it in a room where you’re particularly concerned about the air quality or know there is a higher concentration of air pollutants. Or you may want to place it in the room where you spend most of your time.

Either way, make sure you place your appliance in an open space. Homer recommends that you read your air purifier’s instruction manual for any specifics on placements. “Most manufacturers will tell you to place the purifier on a flat surface, out of direct sunlight, so it doesn't overheat, and away from the walls, so air can circulate around it freely," she adds. "Some may also caution you to keep the unit away from TV and electronics, as they may cause electromagnetic interference that causes the purifier to malfunction.”

  • How long should you run an air purifier?

According to Homer, how long you should run your air purifier depends on the current air quality and how quickly new contaminants may be reintroduced. For instance, homes with pets or greater exposure to VOCs may need to run their air purifiers longer or at a greater frequency. Homer also warns that seasonal pollen surges may also require longer and more frequent cleanings.

Many air purifiers have eco mode options, which monitor the air quality and automatically turn the device off once it has properly improved the air quality. If your air purifier has an eco mode option, Homer recommends using it.

  • How do you clean an air purifier?

Every air purifier model is different, so carefully read the instructions on how to properly clean and care for it. Some HEPA filters are washable, and you can clean or soak them in water and reuse them. However, some reusable options are non-washable, and you may need to vacuum them instead.

Homer suggests cleaning any metal screen pre-filters with water or a vacuum. She notes that most disposable HEPA filters typically need to be replaced approximately every three months, rather than washed and re-used.

To clean your air purifier’s exterior, Homer recommends using a microfiber towel lightly dampened with your favorite all-purpose cleaner. If you need to clean the interior, she warns that most manufacturers caution against using soap on any internal parts of the purifier, since soapy residue attracts dust and may clog up the machine. Whether you wash or replace your air purifier's filter, be sure to turn it off and unplug it before removing it.
