What Is a Steam Generator Iron?

From Kris Jensen-Van Heste,

Steam generator irons, or continuous steam irons, consist of a traditional-looking iron unit connected by tube to a water tank/steam generator. They produce significantly more steam than regular irons, and manufacturers say it's possible to cut your ironing time in half with a steam generator iron.

The Tank

Most steam generator iron tanks hold about 32 ounces of water, enough for 90 minutes to two hours of steam, depending on whether you're using light steam or a heavy flow. Many brands are built specifically to use tap water, making them extremely convenient. If you have a water softener, you may get better results by mixing equal parts tap and distilled water. Some manufacturers discourage using distilled water, however, so an alternative is to switch to bottled spring water.

When comparing steam generator irons, consider whether the tank allows you to refill while you're using it. A low-water indicator, currently found only on higher-end models, is another nice feature. The tank is designed with an integral iron rest, and it can be placed on the ironing board, though keeping it on the floor nearby may be more convenient. Take care to protect any surface you set the generator on, though, as some tanks get very hot on the bottom. A thick towel or heat-resistant pad should be enough.

The Iron

The hand irons are lighter than most self-contained irons, making them a pleasure to use. There's enough steam pressure to iron both sides of a garment at once without exerting any appreciable effort aside from moving the iron, and creases in denim are effortless. This kind of iron is perfect for steaming slipcovers, hanging garments such as gowns and suits, and draperies.

Look for an iron that has a thermostat for ironing temperature and a steam shut-off so you can use it as a dry iron, too. Be sure you choose one with a continuous steam switch that locks; otherwise, when steaming large vertical items such as draperies, you'll have to hold down the steam switch, and that makes the task uncomfortable.

Maintenance

Keeping a steam generator iron in top condition is blessedly simple. Every 10 uses or so, just rinse out the reservoir and let it dry. The iron soleplate, whether Teflon-coated or aluminum, should be cleaned of residue and fibers with a regular iron soleplate cleaner.

One caution: These machines are typically high wattage, so don't plug one into the same circuit as another high energy user such as a microwave and use them both at once, or you'll risk popping a circuit breaker.
