The best strategy is buying a gift not for the sake of just having something to give, but choosing one they will enjoy or use. 
And with today's economy, practical is in. Who really wants a gift they will more than likely never use. I know that I have grown past wanting ornaments that have to be dusted or items I'll likely never read, wear or use. I prefer practical things or those I will enjoy. That's not saying I wouldn't enjoy those over-the-top gifts, they're just not in my future or budget.
When it comes to gift-giving, gift cards can sometimes be the easiest choice, but another gift that is always well received is coffees and teas. Whatever their favorite morning brew is, a sampler pack or a month's supply of K-Cups, Pods, loose tea and such is always a good choice. Or maybe just a gift card or voucher so they can chose their favorite flavors. And coffees and teas are also ideal for gift baskets.
