Power Up When Power's Down
Friday July 3, 2009
During emergency situations, a small portable generator can be extremely useful for keeping even the barest of essentials functioning. They take less storage space than full-size generators, are quieter and have user friendly features. While I can't downplay their importance during an emergency, you don't have to wait till there's a disaster to find this item useful, you can take it camping to power those 'comforts of home' items such as a laptop, DVD player or drip coffee maker, or use it in the backyard to power the summer kitchen. You can even power a microphone or music at an outdoor social.
Honeywell has recently added two new inverter generators to their line of products, the HW1000i (900 watts) and the HW2000i (2000 watts). Both are lightweight, compact and quieter than full-size generators. They're designed to run up to five hours on a full tank and have convenience features such as ergonomic handles and efficiency modes. These four-stroke, single cylinder air-cooled engines are certified for use in all 50 states and Canada.
Small generators are handy in general, but during an emergency they power your radio which can seem like a lifeline to important broadcasts, especially during a long power outage.
