Rival Crockpot Recall

Thursday May 24, 2007
Jarden Consumer Solutions has recalled the following Rival Crockpots: Models 3040, 3735, 5025, 5070, 5445 due to a safety hazard with the handles. If you own one of these Rival Crockpots which were manufactured between January 1999 and September 2004, stop using it immediately and register for this recall at www.rivalrecall.com.

You should not discard the porcelain insert and lid as only the base will be replaced. You'll be requested to send in the cord and enter your crockpot code found on the product label on the bottom of the base. Non-American consumers or anyone having trouble with the online process should register their recalls by phone at 1-800-546-5637, between 6 AM and 3 PM, MST, Monday to Friday.

Thanks for the tip regarding the Rival Crockpot recall. I checked mine right away, and fortunately for me, my model wasn’t listed as a recall item. Thank you

(2) Delores says:

I have a Rival Crockpot Model 3040 with a plug code Y 2905. I removed the crock and lid and was in the process of wiping off the exterior stainless steel when one of the handles came apart in my hand. This model is not a part of the recall. If you own this model I would not lift the crockpot filled with hot liquids by its handles!

(3) Mary says:

I’m sooo glad I was looking at Google listings for Rival crockpots tonight. I own one of the recalled crockpots and will be sending the cord in for a replacement base.

Until I saw this About.com recall notice I had NO idea there was a problem. THANK YOU for this service!!

(4) Linda says:

I have model 64551- plug ST-301 both of my handles broke off when it was picked up full of spaghetti sauce-my husband was nearly burned but dropped it instead. I tried to contact Rival immediately and couldn’t get anyone to help me to report this dangerous situation. I reached customer no-service in India or some foreign country. This was nearly 2 years ago and no help whatsoever. I would never buy a Rival made in China again!!

(5) Heather says:

Thanks for the info. I was looking for a replacement knob and handle as they had both cracked apart, and I came across your website with the recall. Glad I will be able to use my slow cooker again!

Hi I recieved a Rival Crockpot Nbr SCVE500g-cn,My daughter bought it Walmarts. in Woodstock,New Brunswic Canada. The first time we used it we noticed the bottom of the liner was cracked> I took it back and got another one exacley the same. The first time today we was going to use it, The cover had a 1/8 in gap around it,which would allow all the steam to evoparate. I took it back to Walmart, and I purchaced a Rival model SCVP6009A1-CN. I hope we will have better luck with this one. This is for your information
Thank You

(7) Allison says:

I, like Heather above, was looking for a replacement lid and handles for my Rival Crock Pot Model 3154. One handle has broken off and the other is cracked. I was not aware of the recall either. I reported it to Rival. I just hope that I am not like of the other people that I read about and were ignored by Rival. If I don’t hear from the company, I more than likely will not purchase another Rival product.

(8) Becky says:

Overjoyed to buy a like-new Crockpot donated to thrift store where I work. Washed it and immediately put in a beef tender roast, potatoes, carrots and other things.Horrified to taste something ‘rubber-like’ in the potatoes and meat. What is it, and what can be done? Please let me know.

August 18, 2008 at 4:31 pm
(9) Mariette says:

Hi Becky,
When I’ve experienced ‘rubber-like’ vegetables, it’s been due to extended cooking time or heat that is too high and too long. I’ve found that newer Crockpots tend to cook hotter and quicker than older models. Try shortening the cooking time or cook on Low instead of High.
For meals I put in the pot around noon for dinner, I use the High setting for 4 hours and then Warm (if you have that setting).
When I want to set meals from early morning for dinner, I set it on Low.

I hope this helps.

August 25, 2008 at 3:07 pm
(10) Dixie says:

I, too, have now had both of the handles on my Rival crock pot break off. If Rival doesn’t respond, I will never buy another Rival product again.

(11) Robin says:

Thank you for this post. I hadn’t used my crock pot in quite a while and got online just to check out the model. That’s when I saw the recall. Who knows what would have happened?

September 10, 2008 at 2:50 pm
(12) sharon says:

I have Rival Crockpot model SCVS600, and last night the handles broke off, and the steam from the dinner burnt my thumb real bad!
I have called their 1-800 number and put in a report immediately with customer service.
1 hour later someone from from the legal dept called. I am sending him pics of my burns, along with the crock pot.
We will see how this all works out!
I told him DO NOT SEND ME THE EXACT REPLACEMENT…

September 16, 2008 at 6:28 pm
(13) Trudy says:

Thank you for sharing the recall information. I had shredded chicken cooking in my crock & was on my way out the door to “feed the team” for my daughter’s golf team and I just about dropped the whole 8 pounds of chicken. Thank heaven the crock was in the insulated cover which enabled me to “catch” it from hitting the ground. I went online today & found your info with the recall. Thanks. I registered & am sending in the cord as instructed. Has anyone received the replacement base yet?

September 29, 2008 at 5:01 pm
(14) Linda Bozwell says:

I have a Rival Crockpot that I have used 3 times & both handles are breaking off as well as the handle on the glass lid is cracked. I am not impressed with the Rival Crockpot brand & will not be purchasing any more in the future.

October 1, 2008 at 7:26 pm
(15) Diane Watson says:

I bought a rival crock pot never knowing there was a recall. This is a newer model with a warming option-it cooks then switches to warm. I almost burned down my house. The crock pot was smoking the frozen chicken was burned beyond recognition. I had set it to cook for 8 hours I was at work expecting dinner to be ready when I got home. I got charcoal chicken.

(16) alice grenier says:

I haven’t used the crockpot in a few years. When I saw the recall list I unpluged it at once.Thank the Lord it is not one of the recalls. Now that ‘fall’ is here many of my co-workers are ever so happy with the crockpot. That many of us are using the crock again. Will be thankful for recipes if you have any to email.thanks alice grenier.

October 7, 2008 at 7:23 pm
(17) Donna says:

After my lid knob on my crock pot
fell apart, I called to order a new
one. This is the 3rd handle/knob that I’ve had to order, after having
a terrible accident last year. But,
Rival Customer Service was terrible:
I was told they don’t have one in
their inventory, no guess as to when
they would EVER have one to send,
and they suggested I send the entire
crockpot, stoneware liner & lid to
them to “evaluate” at MY expense. I
refused to “throw good money after bad” by wasting gas & postage to get
an “evaluation,” or at best, another
inferior product from a company that could care less! They
obviously haven’t heard that we’re in a poor economy!

I decided to do business with another company that appreciates a
loyal customer, and stands behind
their great product…and it sure
isn’t Rival!

I have a Rival crockpot 3040 but unlike my last crockpot, this one boils food . I can’t turn it down low enough for it to very gently simmer. i thought that was the point of slow cookers. This one cooks so hot it burns things! I wonder if it’s defective or if that’s just how RIVALS ARE?

We have a model no. SCVP609 and last night after cooking chili for 10 hours we removed the ceramic pot and noticed burnt liquid had leaked out of about 25-30 small cracks all around the pot. It is around a year old. Last Rival we will buy.

(24) Mariette says:

Hi,
Here’s the Rival Crock-pot Recall site that shows which models have been recalled: http://www.rivalrecall.com/

November 12, 2008 at 6:31 pm
(25) Mariette says:

In answer to numerous recent questions:
Model 37401BC should be safe – it doesn’t appear on any recalls.

If your crock-pot liner or handles show any cracks or breakage, I would not use it. Either return it under warranty, check to see if there are any recalls for your model or seek a replacement or repair.

If you are awaiting replacement under recall and you haven’t heard after 6 wks, you should follow up with Rival. I think that would be sufficient time.

I’ve found that my newer crock-pot cooks hotter than my old one, probably due to the older model wearing down. I’ve had to adjust the cooking times accordingly. That being said, if a new pot is extremely hot, there could be a flaw with it and you should put in a warranty claim.

Note that if you have only half the recommended amount of food in a crock-pot, it will be cooked a lot sooner and you must adjust (reduce) the cooking time, or foods could burn or become rubbery.

November 12, 2008 at 11:20 pm
(26) Dan says:

I registered for the recall online, sent in my cord and after about eight weeks of waiting, received a brand new Rival crock pot (Model 5025 WG) today.

I thought I would get just the cooking elements, but I got a whole new cooker.

Any idea what I might do with the porcelain insert and lid from my old crock pot?

November 15, 2008 at 1:22 am
(27) Deborah says:

I found this site while looking to contact Rival for the second time. I have model SCR509 and the handle for the lid cracked and broke. I have already received one replacement lid only to have the same thing happen. There also seems to be a problem with how the lid fits. Even when it’s set on low whatever I am cooking bubbles around the lid from the condensation and then leaks over the side onto the counter. It also gets onto the bottom where the heating comes from and has to be scrubbed. I hope it isn’t causing any sort of electrical hazard. I would not recommend this model either. I hope I can find the site to replace the lid for me again. I will also let them know about the boil over problem.

November 17, 2008 at 12:39 pm
(28) housewares says:

In answer to:
Dan:
If I had an extra liner and lid, I’d just squirrel it away for a spare, in case something unfortunate happens to your new one.

Deborah:
When you mentioned that foods bubble over, could it be that your food level in the crock-pot is too high? You should leave 1 to 1-1/2″ of room at the top, otherwise when foods simmer, the heat and contact with lid causes a vacuum effect and liquids will siphon and spill out of a slow cooker.

November 19, 2008 at 8:02 am
(29) Ron says:

I have three model #37601 units, an older version of the #5070 model up for recall. I love these because they cook just right and go forever, but the plastic handles eventually broke and fell off. I’ve made sturdy metal replacement handles with plastic grips for them, problem solved for me….hopefully the manufacturer’s R&D folks will get the same idea.

November 22, 2008 at 9:23 am
(30) Nancy Chapman says:

Last August 6 I followed all the instructions for the recall, registering it online and by phone and sending the cord at a cost of $17.53. I have tried to reach Rival, but the person who answers at 800-557-4825 says she has no record of having received the cord, can’t tell me whom to call and won’t check on it further. Can you advise me?

(33) Lauralee says:

I have a Rival crockpot and the handles are cracked–and I rarely use it! The model no is 3355. This happened to the last one I had too. Not very good manufacturing.

December 16, 2008 at 7:00 pm
(34) Donna says:

Where can you get a replacement lid handle? Preferably one that won’t crack and fall off this time! Mine is not on the recall, and when I checked crockpot.com for replacement lids, they were all out of stock. This is the second crockpot of theirs I’ve had this happen to.

My daughter has one also with no problems.

(38) MrHans says:

Our Rival Smart Crock just had a handle break. Model number 38601 with date code 5003. Got it in August of 2004. We’ve used it 20 times at most. Called Rival because it was the handle that broke and was told it was not part of their recall and was out of warranty. I’m going to report this to http://www.cpsc.gov and see if there’s been other handle breakage on this model.

January 11, 2009 at 6:49 am
(39) Lillian Anker says:

Thank you for warning about carrying a full crockpot. I have been concerned about that since the handle for my lid fell off and also the handle on my son’s crockpot fell off. I am appauled that Rival has such a poor service department. We need to get the word out. What brand have you found to be reliable. Lillian Anker

my rival crockpot model# scv603 is less than a year old and one of the handles broke and the other handle is about to break, what can I do? my first crockpot by rival lasted 25+ years, my crock exploded in my second crockpot and then this happens to my new one. It’s also red to match my kitchen so it’s got me upset. please help, debi

January 20, 2009 at 2:19 pm
(41) housewares says:

Hi,
If your Rival Crock-pot is less than a year old and you have problems with it such as cracked handles, lid knob or liner, you can put in a warranty claim. However, you’ll have to pay to return the pot – that is the downside – depending where you live, this could be more than buying a new pot. I know many don’t bother going this route.
Personally, I would not use a slowcooker that has anything wrong with it.
You could also try to return/exchange it with the dealer. Some retailers have easy return policies. I know that you can easily return appliances to Wal-Mart (without a receipt) if you have problems with them. So that is often my choice retailer because of their easy return policies.

January 25, 2009 at 2:16 pm
(42) Constance says:

I sent my crockpot cord to Rival per their recall instructions 16 weeks ago and have not received the replacement base from Rival yet. I’m not impressed. Also, the Rival crockpot only boiled things….it didn’t have a nice, controlled slow simmer that I valued in my older crockpot for slow cooking. Things often got overcooked.. Not very useful. Now I have a Cuisinart slow cooker and love it.

January 25, 2009 at 2:35 pm
(43) Judy says:

Has anyone experienced their countertop (where crockpot was located) being too hot to touch after cooking w/their crockpot?

Model #SCV551.

January 27, 2009 at 8:55 pm
(44) Mariette says:

I’ve noticed the counter being hot after using a slowcooker. For this reason I always place the cooker on a wooden cutting board.

I had a friend that had a burn mark left on her counter, so it’s better to protect it.

Some slowcookers are designed to sit higher (longer feet) than others off the counter. And counters vary in construction material so it’s hard to know if it can take any or much heat. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I’ve also heard of one who had a coffeemaker leave a burn mark too. Though this may be rare.

Would be good to hear from others on this; whether there has been other incidents.

(45) Carolyn Dixon says:

Just this past weekend (Super Bowl) I had my rival crock pot on the
counter. It burnt and warped the side of my counter top. My mother-in-law’s cousin had her rival crock pot catch fire. She was very lucky
her son in-law came in the the kitchen or her house would be no more. She phoned rival and they replaced her crock pot and counter top. I’m going to phone them and see what they can do for me!

Recall #5445: Handles cracked & broken so I registered online and followed instructions & send plug in Nov.2008. heard nothing. Just tried http://www.crockpot.com under replacement parts. Also tried to contact Holmes in Milford, MA but their website “malfuntioned”

I also sent my registered plug to Rival 16 weeks ago and have received nothing. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote them a letter and enclosed a copyof the delivery confirmation to the fulfillment center–NOTHING! I also e-mailed customer service on the Rival website–NOTHING! Has anyone ever received a replacement????

I have model #37601.Not only did both of the handles crack but the lid’s plastic handle melted down & I had to replace it with a wooden knob. I love crock pot cooking but I will not be replacing mine with another Rival brand.

(49) Sonja says:

I called and registered my recalled rival 5445 but I swear I cannot understand the mailing address in El Paso Tx to send the cord to. It sounded like GeorgePeter#688 but even after playing it several times I couldn’t get it. The recorded message flew over the address so fast that part was slurred together. I will call tomorrow and see if I get a human.

March 1, 2009 at 2:16 pm
(50) sonja says:

I called the 800 number at Rival and talked to someone in customer service. She tried to look up where I had “registered” online and also on the phone with the automated recall registration…guess what…no record of my registration AND the El Paso Tx address hasn’t been in use for months according to the customer service person. She registered me again and gave me a different address to mail the plug to. Box 3900 Peoria, IL 61614 I will try this one and see if we get somewhere. Maybe before I mail it I’ll call the 800 number again and see if they have a record of my call first.

I have a Rival crockpot that is part of the recall. I followed all the instructions to the letter and sent in the cut-off cord so I’d receive a new base. I sent it in October, 2008 and haven’t received my new Rival base. I can’t figure out how to contact Rival to follow up, since their recall websites only allow you to register your product. Did any of you receive a new base from Rival? Any suggestions on how to get satisfaction?

March 5, 2009 at 2:19 pm
(52) June Dushek says:

Early Feb. 2009 I went on line to see if I could obtain new handels for my mod. 3040 slow cooker. I found the recall and followed the instuctions for a replacement, mailed the plug and requested info. 9 Feb. 2009. on March 3rd I had a new cooker deliverd to my home.

(56) Dan says:

It is not just the newer Chinese-made units with handle problems. I have an old US-made, model 3150/2 used maybe 4 times when the plastic handles fell off. It functions very well otherwise so I couldn’t see throwing it away. I made replacement handles from oak and now it is perfect!

I bought a 4 quart Rival Crock Pot (SCV401 TR) and the removable stoneware pot cracked the first time I used it.

(60) Robert Rydell says:

We have a model 3040 Rival Crock-Pot that is less than two years old and very seldom used. The lid handle fell apart while washing the lid. Called Rival; I can buy a complete lid with handle, not the handle only. I stayed on line to answer their satisfaction survey which is loaded toward the proficiency of the telephone representative and little about the satisfaction with the product. Then I discovered the recall site and the multitude of complaints with Rival products and service.

(61) Brenda says:

My handle broke also on my Rival. I am now in the process of getting it replaced based on the instructions listed. I have barely used mine at all, I was very surprised when the handle broke.

July 24, 2009 at 6:05 pm
(62) Uptown says:

I have the new smart pot (SCRC500) and when I went to lift the lid it stuck and I ended up at a burn center with 2nd and 3rd degree burns on about 20% of my body. It will take a total of at least 12 months before they can begin any surgery to free up some scar tissue that is preventing my elbow and wrist from being fully functional, provided all the swelling and redness are gone. I filed an incident with Rival and the first person told me it was very common when cooking beans for the bubbling beans to cake on the lid and cause it to stick. She then forwarded it on to a claim representative who is going to send me a UPS return label in a couple of weeks or so to send it back and have the engineers look at it to determine if the crock pot malfunctioned.

I burned literally all the skin off of my arm, burned down the side of my torso, the hot liquid then accumulated in my belt so I have a nice scar around my waist and 2nd and 3rd degree burns on my knee and thigh. In addition, I have a big scar on my elbow, my neck, burned my eye, inside of my nose, my face, my forehead. It was definitely a bad day.

Now that it has been “escalated” to the claims department, they seem to want to prove their unit works fine and offered me a new replacement and reimbursement of out of pocket expenses. When I asked about my lost wages for the time I am waiting for my burns to heal, all the projects I can’t do in my garden because I can’t go outside for a year and the lifetime of ugly scars plus the related burn problems that the doctor says will last from now on because the oil glands don’t reproduce, I was told “Rival is a very big company”. Am I to take that as we will use our huge staff of attorneys to fight you until you get nothing or they can afford to compensate me for lost wages now and in the future for some point?

Needless to say, my wife hates crock pots. She did finally buy a cheap replacement and the second time I use it, the light doesn’t come on.

I mentioned the cord should be retractable so you can safely use it on the kitchen island like most newer homes have, the first lady said they haven’t changed the design in years because it was meant to be used on the counter so kids couldn’t pull it down on them. The second lady said roughly the same thing and the design engineers came up with a design 20 or 30 years ago with safety in mind.

I don’t like what I went through. I didn’t like what my wife had to endure as they cut off the softball size blister off of my bicep and the football size blister off of my forearm, let alone the ride to the ER and transfer to the burn center. The second lady also mentioned I was getting more into pain and suffering not out of pocket damages.

I had an old slow cooker (also by Rival) that was rectangular and sat on a little griddle type heating element that the kids and I made pancakes on that never had a problem or a lid that stuck for almost 30 years. One of the kids knocked the griddle thing off of the counter and broke it or I would still be using it. My wife was afraid it was an electrical hazzard with the little hole in the corner.

Sorry for the dissertation but I am just venting at what appeared to be attempts to intimidate me if I pursue any action. That could just be my perception because of the difference in the two employees and my arm hurting real bad today.

Even the new Rival smart crockpots are faulty. I bought two SCVP6000-A1 last year at Walmart (one for me and one for my daughter) and both now have broken handles on either side as well as the lids. These plactic handles broke apart while I was moving the crockpot from the counter to the serving area, so not only was I burned, but my finger was also badly cut because the broken plastic created a very sharp edge! This model was made in China … and believe me … I will NOT purchase Rival products again!!!

Googled to find a replacement knob for my crock pot today and came across this – and mine is one of the ones recalled.

Thanks so much! Mailing my stuff in today!

I have model 3745, the cable (too long) got trapped in between the stone pot and the container, I’m glad I didn’t leave the house and noticed sparkles while the cable was catching on fire from the heat. Will contact Rival tomorrow, any body have had this problem???
